ORTHODONTIC RETENTION AND MAINTENANCE OF RESULTS

Our orthodontics treatments offer lasting results. Indeed, when the orthodontic treatment is completed, patients are not left on their own. Protective measures to ensure the durability of the treatment are taken systematically.  Why? Because the body has a memory of sorts and because teeth tend to want to relapse to their original alignment.

Thus, the retention phase begins after the treatment with the retention device.  It is used to maintain the new and improved position of the teeth. This last step is vital to insure the permanent success of the orthodontic treatment.

There are various types of retainers to maintain the correct position of the teeth. Some are removable and some are glued to the teeth (fixed). The orthodontist chooses the best option for each patient.

I invite you to look at the title image above to identify the different devices.

Removable retainers

Essix

The Essix is a transparent plastic shell that covers the teeth. It is more often designed to be used in the upper arch, i.e. for the upper teeth. The Essix is worn full-time for approximately 30 days, except for meals and brushing. Thereafter, it is worn only at night, for a whole year or two.  Each case is different.

Hawley

The Hawley is a device which sits on the palate. It is made of an acrylic plate which is attached to a steel strap or a transparent thread that rests on the teeth to maintain their new position. It is most often designed to be used in the upper jaw, i.e. to the upper teeth. The Hawley is worn full-time for approximately 6 months, except for meals and brushing. Thereafter, it is worn only at night for an additional 6 months.  Each case is different.

Fixed retainers

Lingual wire

Among the fixed retainer, there is the stabilizing wire bonded behind the 6 teeth of the upper and lower arches.  Its positioning makes it invisible. The lingual wire can remain in place for several years without issues, if the patient’s oral hygiene is adequate.
